We all know that exercise is good for our heart and waistline. But did you know that the benefits of physical activity go well beyond weight management and cardiovascular conditioning. It has been proven time and time again that regular exercise delivers a host of health benefits. Just about every ailment is positively affected by exercise. When you move, you excite your body’s heal and repair processes. Toxins and waste products are removed, allowing your body to evaluate and repair itself.
There is more and more research showing that those benefits are not limited to your physical being. Physical activity fuels your soul and intelligence as well. This could be the biggest benefit of all! When you exercise you generate chemical and hormonal responses in your body and brain. One of the key things released in your brain when you exercise is brain derived neurotropic factors, BDNF. BDNF is a fertilizer for brain tissue and neurotransmitters. BDNF is like a raw material to be used in the healing and repair processes of your brain tissue. Mammals that exercise show an increase in neuron and synapse production. This means you are repairing damage from stress and aging. Pair this benefit with some quality reading and you are sharpening that razor wit and increasing your wealth of knowledge!
Oh, it doesn’t stop there! Due to your regular exercise program your dopamine levels are elevated. Higher dopamine levels, in combination with endocannabinoids (the chemical responsible for the “runner’s high”), give you a sense of wellbeing and contentment. With the reduction in stress hormones, and increase in soul soothing neurotransmitters, your mind is freed from the pressures of self-preservation. This physiologic state allows for a higher consciousness, a realm where creativity and productivity reign supreme. Neurons and synapses that are used frequently are strengthened and become more efficient. One positive thought leads to the next. Your exercise program has now become a motivating catalyst for your life. You are no longer looking for the motivations to get moving. You have created positive momentum that will power you through exercise and elevate your enthusiasm for life.
Find some form of physical activity and break a sweat most days of the week. You are going to feel good! You will feel good physically! You will feel good mentally! And most importantly, you will feel good about yourself!! Those sound like some smart moves.
